A whimper escaped Doc as his palm ran up her ribs to cup her breast and his thumb teased her hardened nipple. Owyn brushed his mouth along her jaw, inhaling as he went, and bringing shivers of anticipation.

Doc’s hands worked his belt open, and then his jeans, anxious to get to what was underneath.

When there were no more clothes between them, Owyn pushed Doc into the bed, following her down with his mouth. He kissed her, lapping at her tongue, until the fire inside was a burning pillar. Until she was sweating with need.

His erection lay hard between their bodies, his slight thrusts against her thigh telling her he was as revved up as she was.

Hands braced on either side of her head, Owyn rose up to hover over her. The muscles of his shoulders rippled and flexed as he gazed on her body, starting with her eyes and rolling down to her hips in a leisurely stroll.

“My mate,” he murmured as if trying to believe it.

The tattoo on his neck stood out, reminding her of that first night at Cleaver’s. She knew what it meant now. And that it meant even more to him after the sacrifices Mandi made for Josie and Magic, and ultimately the entire clan. Doc and Owyn could mate now, because of her. She would never be forgotten.

Doc touched her fingers to the tattoo and uttered a near silent thank you.

Owyn reached one hand between their bodies, his fingers brushing softly over her folds. “So ready for me,” he murmured, replacing his touch with his steely erection.

Meeting her eyes, he pressed at her opening, slowly inching inside. Emotions tumbled from his gaze, filling her with so much love she thought she wouldn’t be able to contain it.

“See everything,” he said, his breath hitching at their tight connection.

Doc saw it. Felt it. She never realized how tightly knit her heart was with her pleasure. But now, with Owyn so blatantly showing the depths of his love, she was a hair’s breadth away from coming.

“Know that I’m only yours, and that I’ll never betray this bond. And that I… fuck,” he hissed, pressing in as her muscles contracted in pleasure. “Doc.”

She moaned as her pleasure overtook her, and Owyn flexed in and out in a torturously slow rhythm until she faded into bliss muttering, “I love you, love you.”

“Sweet mate,” he growled, sucking hard at her neck, but never increasing the speed of his thrust.

It was slow and steady. Taking his time. Savoring this night that they’d remember forever.

And Doc couldn’t love him any more. Her heart was full.

Her pleasure built to another lofty peak as Owyn gripped her thigh to spread her wider, for his thrusts to go deeper.

“Ready for my mark, mate?” His voice had changed. Grown wilder. Needy and demanding.

  She’d recognize that panther anywhere.

Her own cat pushed at the surface. Doc could feel her eyes flickering with the cougar.

“Yes, my male. I’m yours now.”

With a satisfied growl, Owyn pushed into her one last time, spilling his release and marking her permanently with his scent. She felt their bond latch into place, deep in the recesses of her heart, digging in and anchoring her to him for eternity.

  Exactly how she wanted it.

A swift bite of his claws to her neck—the physical mark—pushed her over the edge of another orgasm. And she returned the favor with a long mark down his back.

Owyn roared with triumph as more of his release poured into her, sealing their promise better than any spoken word.

  Permanent. Final. Forever.

He slowed to a stop, breathing like there was no oxygen left in the room. Everything around them grew strangely quiet in the afterglow. The way the air is after a hurricane. Still, but shattered, telling you nothing will ever be the same again.

Owyn bent his head to lick the mark at the corner of her neck, and she sighed happily.

“Christina,” he breathed. “Mine. I love you so damn much. Do you feel it?”

“I do.” She cradled his head as he collapsed to the bed, pulling her in close.

“The bond is powerful. I wonder if it’s always like this.”

“I don’t know. But I think it might be.”

“I finally understand why Magic went crazy after Mandi died. Truly understand it.” He shivered. “And the worst part is, you aren’t safe. Lake Haven isn’t safe anymore.”

“I know. But life doesn’t guarantee us safety. In fact, it guarantees the opposite. It’s our job to make it safe. And we will.”

Owyn met her gaze with a lopsided grin. “You sound so sure.”

“I’m not,” she murmured, listening to her instincts. They were telling her something important. Something she wanted to share with Owyn. “But I’m a doctor. I know science and statistics. And I know a shadow can’t live where there’s light. Just like evil can’t thrive where there’s love. And I don’t know if you noticed or not, but there’s a helluva lot of love around this place.”

Owyn nodded, thoughtful, before kissing her shoulder. “Somehow, I noticed,” he said playfully.

Doc snuggled into her mate’s embrace, content for now.

The shadows were coming, sure. But for every darkness, there was a light to battle it.

They simply needed to find the light. And she had faith that they would.
